The Verkhovna Rada has tightened penalties for drivers who get behind the wheel under the influence of alcohol or drugs, as well as under the influence of medical preparations.

If a driver is caught for the first time, they face a fine of 10,200 hryvnias (which is 600 non-taxable minimums, whereas previously it was 200), plus deprivation of driving license for one year.

For a repeated similar violation within a year, a fine of 20,400 hryvnias is provided, which corresponds to 1200 non-taxable minimums. In this case, the driver is also deprived of license for three years and the vehicle may be confiscated — with or without payment.

If the driver violates the law again twice within a year, the fine increases to 40,800 hryvnias (2400 non-taxable minimums). At the same time, the license is revoked for ten years, and the car may be seized for a fee or free of charge. Similar punishment applies to other persons if they transfer control to such a violator.

The law will take effect the day after official publication, but it still needs to be signed by the president.
