The reason for the recall was the likelihood of malfunctions in the power steering system, according to Reuters. The campaign affects 2016 model year vehicles that rolled off the assembly line no later than mid-October.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Canadian Ministry of Transport explained that the aluminum fasteners of the power steering in electric vehicles are prone to intense corrosion. This poses the greatest risk in regions with cold climates, as well as when using chemical de-icing agents on roads.
As part of the service campaign, on the recalled Tesla Model X, service center specialists will replace these fasteners, as well as the steering column assembly. These repairs will be completely free of charge for electric vehicle owners.
A similar problem had already led to a recall campaign in 2018, when Tesla recalled 123,000 of its electric cars. At that time, it was the largest service action in the history of the American manufacturer. The recall then affected Model S sedans produced before April 2016.
