In addition, it was the first CKD project in history that included a full cycle — from welding to painting and final assembly.
It is noteworthy that even after the new Opel Astra H appeared on the market, the previous model continued to enjoy steady demand. Until the last months of production, it was readily purchased. Throughout all 4.5 years of assembly at the Zaporizhzhia Automobile Plant, the Opel Astra Classic remained the company's calling card. However, now at ZAZ they are actively reviewing production processes, and producing cars of different classes in a single technological flow is becoming an increasingly difficult task.
UkrAuto explains that all these years the plant's team worked at the limit of its capabilities, simultaneously assembling many different models and modifications. Previously, the main goal was to utilize ZAZ's idle capacities. Now these capacities are insufficient, and the enterprise is forced to abandon projects that require large expenditures and hold no promise.
It is worth recalling that in 2007 the Tavria left the assembly line. In 2008, it was the turn of the Slavuta and the pickup based on the Tavria. Now the time has come for the Opel Astra. ZAZ is betting exclusively on the Lanos and continues production of VAZ models.
By the way, in Russia, similar production of the Opel Astra G under the Chevrolet Viva brand did not catch on — after a few years, production there was discontinued. In Ukraine, the Astra Classic project turned out to be successful, but its resource has also come to an end.
ZAZ discontinues production of Opel Astra Classic
The CKD assembly project for the Opel Astra started in January 2004. The Astra became the first Western-designed car to be produced in Ukraine.
