European manufacturers were among the hardest hit: they account for almost a third of all unassembled cars — three million units. Pressure on the industry is expected to persist until mid-next year, with full recovery possible only in 2023.

Nevertheless, by the end of 2021, global production of passenger cars will reach 84.9 million units, which is 12 percent higher than in 2020. Thus, even regular production halts due to component shortages caused less damage to the industry than the strict quarantine restrictions in place last year.

Towards the end of this year, manufacturers began implementing new approaches, which allowed them to increase assembly rates. In particular, many companies were forced to simplify model configurations, excluding complex electronic systems and focusing on base versions, reports AUTO-Consulting.
