What is the difference between car classes?
Passenger car classes differ in comfort and dimensions. In addition, there is a clear division into cars for different social strata, which is reflected in the cost, components used, and materials. It is no secret that today a car is not only a means of transportation but also a way to demonstrate one's wealth.
Of course, the size of a car largely affects its functionality. After all, a compact car cannot hold much cargo, and a large SUV is unlikely to be convenient for driving through courtyards and narrow streets.
Also, changing dimensions inevitably leads to an increase in weight, the need to use a more powerful engine, etc. Thus, because most car characteristics are inextricably linked, you can select a few key parameters and divide into classes based only on them.
Class "A" cars
This type of car is also called "Mini". These are compact, economical cars designed for city driving. They are inexpensive and very popular among women.
A characteristic difference is a length of less than 4 meters.
The most popular representatives of A-class cars are:
- Hyundai i10;
- Ravon R2;
- Smart Folio.
B class cars
The next step is called simply and clearly – Small Cars. Standard length from 3.7 to 4.2 meters. They have larger dimensions and, as a result, are more comfortable and allow transporting more cargo.
Produced in body types such as "hatchback" or "compact sedan". Increased capacity makes them a universal option that can be used for city driving, trips to the countryside, etc.
The most well-known cars of this class:
- Renault Logan;
- Chevrolet Aveo;
- Hyundai Accent.
C class cars
These cars are also called "Medium Cars", "Golf class". These are medium-sized cars (length up to 4.5 meters), with sedan or hatchback bodies, capable of comfortably seating up to 5 passengers. Combined with increased trunk space, this makes them the most versatile cars.
It should also be said that C-class cars are still budget-friendly.
The most popular cars:
- Volkswagen Golf (it is thanks to this car that the second name "Golf class" appeared);
- Toyota Corolla;
- Mitsubishi Lancer.
D class cars
This type of car is called "Large Cars" and belongs to the mid-price segment. Here are sedans and station wagons up to 4.6 meters long, with more attention paid to comfort. More expensive materials and components are used, which affects the price.
The difference from previous car classes is also visible in the brands. Manufacturers such as Mercedes-Benz and Audi appear here, for which models of this class are considered "budget".
Such cars will be an excellent option for a daily city car, as they comfortably accommodate 5 passengers, have a spacious trunk, and good driving characteristics.
D class cars:
- Mercedes-Benz C-class (despite the name, according to European classification it belongs to class "D");
- Audi A4;
- Toyota Camry;
- Volkswagen Passat.
E class cars
Alternative names – "Executive Cars", "Business class". As can be understood from the name, these cars are no longer just a means of transportation that should deliver the owner to work or a business meeting, but also an indicator of social status. They are preferred by managers and businessmen.
As with any status item, high-quality materials and modern electronics are used to produce such cars. As a result, we get excellent driving characteristics, a high level of comfort, stylish design, and a very decent price.
In Europe, there is a decline in the popularity of such cars, although in our country they are still in demand.
The most famous E-class cars:
- BMW 5 series;
- Hyundai Genesis;
- Volvo S80.
F class cars
Also known as "Luxury Cars", or "representative class". These cars are a dream for many car enthusiasts. Large sedans, up to five meters long, offer their owners the best of everything, from driving characteristics to interior trim and comfort level. Most cars are initially designed with the expectation that the owner will be in the back seat, and the driver will take control.
Like the previous class, these cars are primarily intended to demonstrate social status, and they do this job well.
The most popular cars:
- BMW 7 series;
- Mercedes S-class
- Maybach 62.
S-class cars
Cars also known as "Sport coupe", "sports cars", "supercars" are initially designed to get maximum speed and handling. Usually, they can demonstrate all their capabilities only on special tracks. The low seating position creates serious problems when driving on poor roads or off-road.
Nevertheless, they are very popular among wealthy people.
They cannot be called uncomfortable, but as soon as you see such a car, you immediately understand that it is created only for driving at high speeds. No big companies, no cargo transportation.
The most prominent representatives of this class are:
- Mercedes-Benz AMG GT;
- BMW M4;
- Subaru BRZ.
Classification for minivans and SUVs
Of course, such car types as SUVs, minivans, and pickups are not left without attention. Therefore, in addition to car classes a, b, c, d, e, f, s, there are:
M-class
Characteristic features of this class are an extremely spacious interior that allows transporting from 5 to 9 passengers, or a large amount of cargo. It includes minivans and station wagons. The multifunctionality of such cars is clearly reflected in the alternative name "Multi-purpose".
These include:
- Hyundai H-1;
- Renault Kangoo;
- Ford Galaxy.
J-class
A class for SUVs and jeeps. The main difference is large dimensions and excellent off-road capability. However, despite the fact that the main purpose of such cars is off-road and driving outside cities, many buy them to emphasize their status.
Known representatives:
- BMW X5;
- Mercedes-Benz Gelandewagen;
- Kia Sportage.
Other classifications
Of course, the European classification is not the only one, although it is extremely popular. In addition, the American system, which has existed since 1985, is quite well known. Its feature is the division of cars by useful interior volume. The classification adopted in the UK is also known.
Below is a table with parameters of car classes.
