The first car to receive such a system will be the hybrid Chevrolet Volt — this is reported in a statement by the American manufacturer.
The company Powermat, which produces wireless charging stations, will work on creating the new device for GM cars. The American concern will invest five million dollars in this project.
The charging device itself will be made in the form of a recess on the center tunnel. It will be possible to place not only phones there, but also compact MP3 players, as well as portable gaming consoles from Apple, Blackberry, HTC, Motorolla, and Nintendo. Similar chargers will be installed in all new models of Chevrolet, Buick, GMC, and Cadillac brands.
Back in 2007, a similar wireless device for cars was demonstrated by Visteon, which was previously a division of Ford. The principle of operation there is the same as that of Powermat: to recharge a phone from the car's onboard network, it is enough to simply place it on the charging pad.
GM will equip cars with wireless phone charging
General Motors concern will start installing wireless charging for phones on its cars from mid-2012.
