Formula 1 and the FIA, together with the organizers of the Australian Grand Prix, have officially announced the cancellation of all events of the Australian stage. Everyone who purchased tickets will receive a full refund," the official statement said.
The decision to cancel was also supported by the drivers. Lewis Hamilton from the Mercedes team noted that this step was correct and emphasized that health and safety should remain the priority.
The stage was scheduled to take place from March 13 to 15 at the Albert Park circuit in Melbourne. However, this week, one of the employees of the McLaren Racing team tested positive for coronavirus. The infected person was isolated, and the team itself decided to refuse to participate in the competition.
Earlier, due to the coronavirus epidemic, the World Championship stage in Shanghai, China, was also postponed indefinitely. These races were supposed to take place from April 17 to 19.
