The appearance of the first automobile plant in China became the starting point for the entire automotive industry of the country — it was FAW that produced the first Chinese truck and the first passenger car.
Now FAW is one of the leaders of China's automotive industry. The corporation's annual sales exceed 3.3 million cars. In the global Fortune Global ranking, the company ranks 132nd among the 500 largest world corporations, and its presence extends to 40 countries. FAW's structure includes 28 subsidiary enterprises, and the corporation holds controlling stakes in another 18 companies.
FAW has established joint production with Volkswagen AG, Toyota Motor Corporation, and Mazda Motor Corporation. Partners actively participate in the development of the model range, and also supply technologies, units, and components for car production.
FAW model development is carried out in five research centers around the world:
- The main R&D center in Changchun (China) — here platforms, chassis, powertrains are created, and other design work is carried out.
- Beijing Center for Advanced Technical Innovation (China).
- Shanghai Research and Development Center for "New Energy" vehicles (China) — responsible for exterior and interior design.
- Center for Advanced Research in Munich (Germany).
- AI Research Center in Silicon Valley, California (USA).
Today FAW produces equipment of six categories: light, medium, and heavy-duty trucks, SUVs, passenger cars, electric vehicles, and buses. Under its own brands — Xiali, Hongqi, JiaxingFAW, and Besturn — various models are released. In addition, FAW's facilities in China assemble Volkswagen CC and Bora, Audi A4, A6, Q5, and Q3, Mazda, as well as Toyota Prius, LC200, and RAV4.
In addition to strengthening its position in the domestic market, FAW is actively developing foreign directions and expanding its international dealer and service network. The corporation's plans include entering the Ukrainian market of passenger and commercial vehicles. For this purpose, FAW has concluded exclusive agreements with the AIS Group of Companies, one of the largest Ukrainian operators for the sale and maintenance of cars, buses, and agricultural machinery. According to the agreements, AIS will handle the import and retail sale of trucks with a load capacity from 2.8 to 40 tons, as well as FAW passenger cars (sedans and crossovers). The partner's area of responsibility includes the development of the dealer network and the organization of warranty and post-warranty service.
In the future, FAW is considering cooperation with AIS in the segment of electric vehicles and buses.
Sales of FAW cars in Ukraine are expected to begin in the second half of 2019.
