The system injects distilled water into the intake manifold through a nozzle. The water is stored in a separate tank, which in the M4 GTS is located in the trunk. The fluid is supplied by a pump at a pressure of 10 bar, and its required volume is calculated by electronics depending on crankshaft speed and temperature.
This system improves the fuel combustion process, reduces air temperature, increasing engine output (by about five percent) and its operational stability, as well as improving efficiency and reducing CO2 emissions (by 13 and four percent, respectively).
“The system works best on cars with engines producing more than 109 horsepower per liter,” Bosch top manager Fabiana Piazza told Autocar. “We are launching our development on the market right now, when legislation on harmful emissions from new cars is becoming stricter.”

According to representatives of Bosch, on mass-produced cars the system will be close in design to that used on the M4 GTS. However, other vehicles may require less fluid. For example, the water reserve in the BMW sports car is five liters.
Bosch is already in negotiations with automakers to supply this system, but with whom exactly is not yet specified.
