The car's premiere took place at a special event at the automaker's American plant in Charleston, South Carolina.
The new S60 is based on the lightweight modular SPA architecture, which is already used on the XC90 and XC60 crossovers, the "90-series" passenger cars, and the V60 wagon. The S60 sedan shares its main components and units with the latter.
The length of the new Volvo S60 is 4761 mm, width including exterior mirrors is 2040 mm, and height is 1431 millimeters. The wheelbase size is 2872 millimeters. The trunk volume is 442 liters. The car features a sporty independent double-wishbone front suspension and a multi-link rear suspension.
The engine lineup of the new Volvo S60 will not include diesels. The base engine of the sedan is a two-liter four-cylinder turbocharged T5 unit producing 249 horsepower. It is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and an all-wheel drive system. Such a sedan can accelerate from standstill to 100 km/h in 6.5 seconds. Additionally, the S60 will be offered with a two-liter engine with a turbocharger and supercharger, delivering 310 horsepower.
In addition, the lineup includes two hybrid modifications. The first is equipped with a T8 engine with a displacement of two liters and combined supercharging (turbocharger and driven supercharger). It works in tandem with a 65-kilowatt electric motor located on the rear axle. In total, the units produce 390 hp and 640 Nm of torque. The sedan reaches the first "hundred" in 4.9 seconds, and its maximum speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h.
The top version was developed by specialists from the factory tuner Polestar, which has become a separate brand. It is equipped with the same hybrid powertrain, but features a different engine control unit, a sport exhaust system, Brembo brakes, and retuned suspension. The total performance of the units has been increased to 415 hp and 670 Nm. Acceleration to 100 km/h takes 4.7 seconds.
The list of electronic assistants includes the City Safety system, which can detect objects in the path and apply the brakes if necessary, as well as a semi-autonomous driving function that operates at speeds up to 130 km/h.
