The model's debut will take place this week at the Chicago Auto Show.

The refreshed Explorer has not only all the standard gadgets necessary for a police car (flashing lights, special computer, etc.), but also several interesting latest-generation driver assistance systems.

First, the SUV received a "smart" transmission with a "Pursuit Mode." If it "senses" a change from normal driving to aggressive driving, it automatically optimizes and speeds up gear shifts to ensure better dynamics. And when the car returns to normal driving, the gearbox switches back to economy mode.

Second, the improved control electronics can perform the so-called J-turn – turning exactly 180 degrees. Thanks to such a precise maneuver, the driver can instantly gain speed without needing to straighten the steering wheel.

Third, the "cop" Explorer can boast a safety system for officers called Surveillance Mode. Its essence is that if someone approaches the car closely from behind while it is parked, it automatically locks all windows and doors.

Among other things, the SUV is equipped with armored front doors with glass, reinforced suspension, engine protection, and a system for scanning the space around the car.

The engine lineup includes two units – a 3.7-liter naturally aspirated V6 with 304 hp and a 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 with 365 hp. They work in tandem with the aforementioned transmission – a 6-speed automatic.

The Explorer is very popular among American police officers. For example, in 2013, Ford delivered 14,000 such SUVs to law enforcement agencies.
