Weak demand for the Mercedes R-Class and Chrysler Pacifica, it would seem, should have cooled the ardor of automakers. However, Hyundai is not deterred. The Korean brand is preparing to introduce its own minivan-crossover Portico, which will become the production version of the namesake concept that debuted in Chicago three years ago. Buyers will be offered variants with two or three rows of seats.
Such a large car, over five meters long and claiming business-class status, needs serious powertrains. Most likely, under the hood will be gasoline V6 engines of 3.3 liters (240 hp) and 3.8 liters (290 hp). Later, the lineup may be expanded with four-cylinder engines and a hybrid setup. The transmission is a six-speed automatic.
The start of Portico sales on the domestic market of South Korea is scheduled for the third quarter of next year. At the same time, production of the minivan-crossover will be organized not in Korea, but at Hyundai's plant in Alabama.
