Last autumn, the Saeima of Latvia approved new rules regarding vehicles. Owners of cars registered in the Russian Federation were given a deadline until the middle of this month to re-register their cars with Latvian plates. Those who ignore the requirement will face a fine ranging from 750 to 2000 euros, and the car itself will be confiscated. In addition, Latvian parliamentarians made another decision — to transfer confiscated cars to Ukraine as humanitarian aid.

Drivers whose cars have Russian registration complain: models manufactured for the Russian market do not have EU certification, so it is simply impossible to register them in Latvia. Moreover, as it turned out, the costs of taxes and customs duties during re-registration can amount to more than a third of the car's price for owners.
