Both cars earned the highest rating — five stars — based on the test results.
The protection of the driver and adult passengers in the Ford Focus was rated by experts at 85%, children at 87%, pedestrians at 72%, and the functioning of electronic assistants at 75%. At the same time, the inspection revealed that in a rear-end collision, the front passenger has a fairly high probability of neck injury. For pedestrians, the main threat is posed by the side pillars of the model. The specialists also gave a high rating to the level of safety for child passengers. Among the auxiliary electronic devices, the experts highlighted the speed limiter and the lane departure warning system.
The Volvo XC40 also earned the maximum five stars. The rating for driver and passenger safety was 97%, children — 87%, pedestrians — 85%, and the effectiveness of electronic systems — 71%. The XC40 demonstrated excellent results in almost all types of crash tests. However, the specialists noted the insufficient protection of the front passenger in a frontal impact. For pedestrians, the maximum risk comes from the side pillars and the front edge of the hood.
Representatives of the organization noted that the Euro NCAP tests were conducted according to an updated methodology, which includes the assessment of autonomous emergency braking with the function of recognizing cyclists and pedestrians in poor visibility. In addition, since this year, new tests have been added to the program for lane keeping assist systems that prevent the car from unintentionally leaving its lane.
