Experts added a new type of frontal collision to the testing program, in which the overlap is only 25 percent and the impact is on the front passenger side, not the driver's. The speed in this test reaches 64 km/h — the same indicator as in the test with the impact on the driver's side.

The new crash test was first tried by twelve cars at once: Chevrolet Malibu, Ford Fusion, Honda Accord, Hyundai Sonata, Lincoln MKZ, Mazda 6, Nissan Altima, Subaru Legacy, Subaru Outback, Toyota Camry, Volkswagen Jetta, and Volkswagen Passat.

Most of the cars successfully passed the "passenger" test, but three participants failed to get high scores. The Volkswagen Jetta sedan showed only an acceptable level, while the Chevrolet Malibu and Volkswagen Passat received only "poor." The passenger in the Malibu did not hit any of the airbags at all, hitting his head on the front panel of the cabin.
