Gigafactory 4 is planned to assemble electric vehicles and produce battery packs. This information was reported in his Twitter microblog by Jörg Steinbach, who holds the post of Minister of Economy and Energy of the federal state of Brandenburg.
In January, large-scale protests by local residents took place on the site allocated for the construction of the enterprise. They opposed the disruption of the existing ecosystem. Tesla representatives previously stated that three times more trees would be planted around the plant than would have to be cut down during construction. However, environmentalists disagree with this approach, emphasizing that the forest is home to many animals that could die.
Back in January, at the initial stage of clearing the site, workers discovered 25 unexploded artillery shells left over from World War II. The total weight of the found ammunition and its fragments, which had lain in the ground for 75 years, was at least 85 kilograms.
Gigafactory 4 will be built near Berlin, not far from the under-construction Berlin-Brandenburg Airport. The area of the enterprise will be about 300 hectares, which is comparable to the size of approximately 420 football fields. The launch of the factory will create about 10 thousand new jobs. This production will establish the output of the compact crossover Model Y, the most affordable Tesla model — Model 3, as well as battery packs for electric vehicles.
