At the meeting with the president-elect, the heads of leading automakers were present: Mark Fields from Ford, Mary Barra from GM, and Sergio Marchionne from FCA.
During the talks, Trump stated plans to reduce taxes on cars assembled in the US by 75% and significantly simplify bureaucratic procedures for obtaining permits to build new assembly plants in the country. At the same time, he intends to increase duties on cars imported from abroad.
Automakers decided to adjust their own strategy in light of the new government course. Thus, Ford abandoned the idea of building a plant in Mexico, and GM announced an investment of a billion dollars in the development of its enterprises on American soil. Fiat Chrysler also intends to invest the same amount in production in the US.
