The 1.5-liter naturally aspirated engine will replace the previous 1.3-liter unit, which developed 99 horsepower. The new engine produces 111 hp and a peak torque of 136 Nm.

With this engine, the updated Yaris reaches 100 km/h in 11 seconds — almost a second faster than the version with the 1.3 engine. According to the manufacturer, fuel consumption has decreased by 12% and should now be 4.3–4.4 liters instead of the previous 4.9.

The power unit can almost instantly switch operating modes between the Otto cycle and the Atkinson cycle and back. In addition, it received water cooling for the exhaust manifold.

Assembly of the new engine will be organized at Toyota's Polish plant.
