First Generation (2004—2011)
The BMW 1 Series replaced the Compact model and became the most compact in the Bavarian concern's lineup. Development of the new car began in the early 21st century: sketches were approved in 2001, and from 2002, the first prototypes appeared on roads in Germany, Spain, and the USA. The model was built on the new 'E' platform and at its premiere was the only one in its class with rear-wheel drive.
The world premiere took place in 2004 at the Frankfurt Motor Show. Initially, the car was offered only as a five-door hatchback (E87 index). In 2007, a three-door version (E81), as well as a coupe (E82) and convertible (E88), were released. Unlike the 3 Series convertible, the '1 Series' had a fabric folding roof. Despite its own platform, the model borrowed many components and assemblies from the 'older' 3 Series.
The first generation was updated twice — in 2007 and 2011. In 2010, the 'hot' version BMW 1M debuted in a coupe body. It differed from the standard coupe with wider body proportions, sporty suspension settings, boosted engines, and improved transmission. Thanks to aluminum parts in the body and suspension, the weight of this version was reduced by 35 kg compared to the regular coupe.
Second Generation (since 2011)
The second generation BMW 1 Series was introduced in 2011 at the Frankfurt Motor Show. As with the first generation, the five-door hatchback was shown first, and its three-door version appeared a year later at the Paris Motor Show. The car is built on the new 'F' platform with an increased wheelbase and larger body dimensions compared to its predecessor.
The model is equipped with three petrol engines (1.6, 2.0, and 3.0 L) and two diesel engines (1.6 and 2.0 L). Transmissions — six-speed manual or automatic. Drive — rear or all-wheel drive.
