According to K. Elsig, Ukraine ranks fourth in Europe in terms of road accident mortality, and is also among the leaders in pedestrian deaths.
Deputy Head of the Department of the State Automobile Inspectorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine, Serhiy Budnyk, reported that this year the number of traffic safety violations has decreased. Thus, in the first nine months of 2009, 5.2 million such offenses were recorded, while in the same period of 2008, there were 6.4 million. He also noted that the number of deaths per 100,000 population in Ukraine is 11.9, which is already close to the European average. For comparison, the lowest rate — 5.9 per 100,000 people — is registered in Sweden.
People's Deputy Oleksandr Skybinetskyi, in turn, emphasized that in Ukraine there are 961 road accident victims per million cars, while in the United States this figure is 163.
