Let us recall how the market situation changed in the first half of the year.

In January, 6.6 thousand new passenger cars were registered in Ukraine, which is 37% more than a year earlier. The leader among brands was Japanese Toyota — its cars received 941 license plates. And the most popular model of the month was the Volkswagen Golf, which has already been discontinued in other countries due to the diesel scandal: it was chosen by 318 buyers.

In February, the market grew by 21% compared to the same period in 2017, reaching 5.8 thousand cars. Volkswagen took the first place among brands, with 830 people choosing its cars. This result for the German brand was ensured by 2015 dieselgate cars, and again the Golf played the main role — it was purchased by 408 drivers, and the model became the best-selling of the month for the second time in a row.

The first warning bell rang in March: the number of new car registrations fell by almost 7% compared to March last year, amounting to 6.8 thousand. Toyota again came out ahead in the brand ranking with 898 cars sold, and in the model list, the Volkswagen Golf led for the third consecutive month — in March, 414 people became its owners.

April almost repeated March's result — just over 6.8 thousand new passenger cars sold. At the same time, demand returned to growth compared to 2017: registrations increased by 6%. Toyota again became the best brand (852 cars), but there was a change of leader among models. The most popular car in April was the Renault Duster — 308 such cars joined Ukrainian car fleets.

In May, Ukrainians bought only a few cars less than in the previous month, but the market showed slight growth (+4%) compared to the same period last year. Toyota retained its lead among brands, although its gap narrowed by only 2 cars compared to April. And the best-selling model was another dieselgate car — the Audi A3, which found 264 owners.

In June, the new car market cooled again, and this time the decline affected both June last year (-5.4%) and May (-4.8%). In the first summer month, only 6.5 thousand cars received license plates. Toyota remained at the top, selling 745 cars, and after six months, the KIA Sportage regained the title of bestseller — 251 buyers chose it.

In the final ranking of the first half of the year, the TOP-10 brands look like this: TOYOTA — 4983 cars sold (+20% compared to the same period last year); RENAULT — 3839 (-5%); VOLKSWAGEN — 3692 (+44%); SKODA — 2513 (+5%); NISSAN — 2403 (+21%); HYUNDAI — 2392 (+18%); AUDI — 2009 (+84%); KIA — 1812 (-31%); FORD — 1579 (-11%); MAZDA — 1516 (+37%).
