As Reuters writes, the German automaker, which in 2021 relied on natural gas for 54% of its energy consumption, is exploring where it can install solar panels at its plants and is developing plans with local authorities to transport hydrogen to its plant in Leipzig, Germany.

When asked what would happen to BMW's plants in the event of a halt in gas supplies from Russia, he stated: "Not only BMW, but the entire sector will come to a standstill."

The new plant in Debrecen, Hungary, according to BMW, will be the world's first automobile plant to operate entirely without fossil fuels. It will rely heavily on solar energy, with the automaker also exploring the use of geothermal energy.
