Testing of self-driving cars in Innopolis should start in June 2018. This statement was made by the mayor of the city, Ruslan Shagaleev. He clarified that work is currently underway in Innopolis to create an unmanned vehicle for the KAMAZ company.
"In June 2018, we intend to conduct testing of unmanned cars from Yandex in Innopolis. The company is forming a separate team here that will work on refining movement algorithms on city streets. We support this initiative, we invited them ourselves and are ready to create the necessary conditions. We have the specialists they need, and we can share our own intellectual developments," noted Shagaleev.
Yandex announced the start of testing cars with automatic control systems in May last year. The technology is being tested on modified hybrid Toyota Prius. The cars are equipped with an Nvidia GTX graphics processor and a LiDAR optical rangefinder. In addition, for spatial orientation, the car uses the navigation system "Yandex.Navigator" and the mapping service "Yandex.Maps". Installed sensors and detectors allow recognizing objects ahead and road signs.
At the start of testing, Yandex emphasized that the ultimate goal is to create a fifth-level automotive autopilot. This means that the car will be able to move and navigate on the road independently, without requiring human participation.
