Volvo's Chief Technical Officer, Torbjörn Holmström, personally participated in the testing of the 18-ton autonomous dump truck FMX, which was carried out at a depth of 1.3 kilometers in a mine owned by Boliden Mineral AB.
The executive decided to see for himself the reliability of the self-driving vehicle's systems and stood in the path of the moving machine, remaining motionless until the truck came to a complete stop. This risky experiment was captured in a short official video.
The Swedish manufacturer plans to deploy its first autonomous truck in the mine as early as this autumn, but initially it will operate in a test mode. Over the next year, the company expects to add three more self-driving vehicles to its fleet.
