2015 was a record year for car recalls

For the United States, this became the maximum indicator for service campaigns. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the leaders in the number of vehicle returns were Fiat Chrysler, Honda, Ford, Toyota, and General Motors — together they accounted for 72 percent of all recalls.

The main reason for service actions in 2015 was defective airbags from Takata. Over the entire period, 17 million vehicles were recalled due to this malfunction.

Why is Volkswagen not on the list? The NHTSA noted that in their case it was not about a technical defect in the cars. Recall that it was the United States that accused the German manufacturer of using complex software that allows circumventing environmental requirements in America.
