Let us remind you that today Wards Auto published an updated rating of the best engines. In the past, Volkswagen engines often found themselves among the ten most technologically advanced units, and this time they could well have made it to the list again.

But the German manufacturer was not allowed to participate due to violations related to diesel engine emission indicators. This was the reason for the scandal that came to be known as "dieselgate." This scandal seriously hit Volkswagen's financial performance — the concern recorded a quarterly loss for the first time in fifteen years.

It is worth noting that for the first time in the history of the competition, three hybrid units made it into the top ten powertrains: Chevrolet Volt, Hyundai Sonata, and Toyota Prius. Engine testing was conducted by the Ward's Auto editorial team in October and November 2015.
