Volkswagen has launched a cash compensation program for owners of diesel vehicles at the center of the scandal. It covers both new and used cars with such engines.

Under the program's terms, the owner receives a card for $500 with no usage restrictions, as well as a card with an amount from $500 to $750 that can only be spent at Volkswagen dealerships. Thus, the German manufacturer hopes to retain its customers and prevent them from switching to other brands.

To receive and activate the cards, owners of such vehicles in the US simply need to visit a dealership and confirm ownership of the car. The program went into effect today, November 9.
