Ukrainian car license plates had regional letter codes, with Crimea using the codes "AK" and "KK". After Putin signed documents on the inclusion of the Republic of Crimea into the Russian Federation, preparations began for issuing new documents, license plates, and other attributes for the full integration of the peninsula into the Russian space.

In addition to re-registering cars, residents will also have to replace their driver's licenses. Authorities state that the procedure will be free of charge and that sufficient time will be allocated for it.

How the issue of re-registration with the Ukrainian State Automobile Inspectorate will be resolved remains unclear—most likely, it will not be resolved at all. The question of how Crimeans will be able to cross the Ukrainian border with such vehicles also remains open.
