The film's action takes place simultaneously in the 19th century and in modern-day Manhattan. Thief Peter Lake falls in love with the dying Beverly Penn, a girl living in the house he has just robbed. His love may turn out to be not only pure and sincere, but also his last, as the henchmen of the local mafia boss, who intends to kill Peter, are hot on his heels. One day, when the gangsters almost manage to send the boy to the next world, he is saved by... a magical white horse. Some time later, fleeing from another gang of bandits, the horse and his boy crash into a wall of clouds and disappear for many years. They return when a fire is raging in New York, and Peter discovers in himself the qualities of a true Messiah: he sees and hears what is inaccessible to others; he remembers all the dead and performs miracles worthy of the Savior himself.
