Renault is working on the next generation of the Megane with a new design and a switch to rear-wheel drive. The expected range will allow the model to compete with the Tesla Model Y. This is reported by Auto Express.

New Renault Megane: a different platform and proportions

The basis of the future model could be the RG EV Medium 2.0 architecture. The first car on it is planned to be released in 2028, but the debut date of the Megane specifically is not given. The use of the platform has already been confirmed for the next Scenic and Rafale.

The architecture is designed for cars 4.3–4.8 m long with a wheelbase of 2.85 m. It allows for the creation of both tall crossovers and lower models.

According to Renault Group design chief Laurens van den Acker, future electric vehicles will get shorter overhangs, larger wheels and new silhouettes. For the interior, a wide information screen near the windshield and a separate central control display are being considered.

Renault range: about 750 km on electric power

For electric vehicles on Medium 2.0, Renault is aiming for at least 748 km on the WLTP cycle. Versions with a gasoline generator should cover about 1400 km. These are the platform's target figures, not the final Megane specifications.

The single-motor powertrain will develop about 279 hp and 350 Nm. Rear-wheel drive will be the base layout, and all-wheel-drive versions are also envisaged.

The engineers are aiming to combine an LFP battery with a capacity of less than 90 kWh with a car weight of up to 2000 kg. The battery is planned to be integrated into the body's structural frame. The price of the new Megane has not yet been announced.
