In the standard version, the Mercedes-AMG A45 and Mercedes-AMG CLA45 engines develop 387 hp and 480 Nm of torque, while in the top S modification, the four-cylinder produces 421 hp and 500 newton-meters.

The engine uses many technical solutions developed for the four-liter twin-turbo V8, which also powers the Mercedes-AMG GT supercar. The 16-valve power unit features a twin-scroll turbocharger with an electronically controlled wastegate, two overhead camshafts, and an electronically controlled water pump.
The engine is paired with a specially tuned eight-speed dual-clutch robotic gearbox and the 4Matic+ all-wheel drive system. The car has a special drift mode that allows the vehicle to be sent into a controlled slide. It is activated by turning off the dynamic stability control system and switching the gearbox to manual mode, after which most of the torque begins to be transferred to the rear wheels.

The Mercedes-AMG A45 S can accelerate from standstill to 100 km/h in 4 seconds, while the CLA45 reaches 100 km/h 0.1 seconds slower. The top speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h, but when ordering the AMG Driver’s Package, the electronic limiter is moved to 270 km/h. At the same time, the A45 S hatchback can reach 100 km/h in 3.9 seconds.
In total, six driving modes are provided: Comfort, Sport, Sport+, Slippery, Individual, and Race. The latter is only available for the top S versions of the new models as part of the optional AMG Dynamic Plus sport package.

The Mercedes-AMG A45 and Mercedes-AMG CLA45 received a new steering rack with an adjustable gear ratio and two variants of control electronics settings, which change depending on the selected driving mode. The top versions of the new models are also equipped with six- and single-piston brake mechanisms at the front and rear, respectively.
