The exterior of the new "three" was made in accordance with the new development of the corporate KODO design. Some stylistic solutions were borrowed from the Kai concept car, presented last autumn in Tokyo. The interior features a new steering wheel, an extended central armrest, and an 8.8-inch media center screen.

The engine lineup includes a new two-liter engine from the SkyActive-X family. In such an engine, the fuel-air mixture can ignite in the cylinder during compression, as happens in diesel power units. At the same time, such engines use traditional spark plugs, which will be activated under high loads.

The engine will operate using mild hybrid technology — together with a compact electric motor powered by a 24-volt on-board electrical network. Thanks to this scheme, fuel economy will increase by approximately 20–30% compared to similar units of the same displacement.

Also, the new Mazda 3 will retain the previous SkyActive-G engines with a displacement of 1.5, 2.0, and 2.5 liters. In addition, a diesel unit with a volume of 1.8 liters will be available. Transmissions — six-speed "manual" or "automatic" with six speeds.

The model will have a version with all-wheel drive based on the modernized i-Activ system and the function of distributing traction between the front and rear axles.
