This refers to the law "On Amendments to Certain Legislative Acts of Ukraine Regarding Strengthening Liability for Certain Offenses in the Field of Road Safety" No. 1231-IX, which the parliament adopted on February 16, 2021. According to it, drivers now face the following penalties for driving a vehicle under the influence of alcohol:

  • First offense – a fine of 17,000 UAH and license suspension for 1 year.
  • Repeated offense – 34,000 UAH, license suspension for 3 years, possible administrative arrest for 10 days and vehicle seizure.
  • Third offense – 51,000 UAH, license suspension for 10 years, vehicle confiscation, possible administrative arrest for 15 days.
  • If people are injured or killed in a drunk driving accident, criminal liability applies – imprisonment for up to 12 years (depending on the consequences), as well as license suspension for up to 10 years.

In addition, this same law tightens penalties for violating the rules on seat belts and motorcycle helmets, speed limit restrictions, running a red light, fleeing the scene of an accident, and driving without a license.
