The final results are based on the ratings that cars received both from professional test drives and consumer reviews. One important detail was observed – only models with enhanced safety systems were allowed into the TOPs. Namely, those equipped with a forward collision warning system and a pedestrian detection function.

As a result, the following picture emerged (winners were named in 10 categories):

  • Best compact car up to $25,000: Toyota Corolla
  • Best subcompact crossover up to $25,000: Mazda CX-30
  • Best hybrid car for $25-35 thousand: Toyota Prius
  • Best electric car for $45-55 thousand: Tesla Model 3
  • Best midsize car for $25-35 thousand: Toyota Camry
  • Best compact crossover for $25-35 thousand: Subaru Forester
  • Best midsize crossover for $45-55 thousand: Lexus RX
  • Best SUV for $35-45 thousand: Subaru Outback
  • Best 7-seat crossover for $35-45 thousand: Kia Telluride
  • Best compact pickup for $35-45 thousand: Honda Ridgeline

As you can see, 9 out of 10 positions were taken by cars manufactured in Asia. Moreover, 8 of them are Japanese-made vehicles. Another interesting detail – in the satisfaction rating of new car buyers, published by Consumer Reports a few days earlier, the Mazda CX-30 crossover performed the worst, while in this list it, on the contrary, turned out to be among the best.

Note that earlier Consumer Reports named the brands that produce the best cars of our time.
