We are talking about those malfunctions that occurred directly on the road (due to which drivers had to seek outside help).
The largest share of breakdowns fell on the group of electronics, battery and ignition system – as much as 43.2%. As noted in AvD, over the year the share of such breakdowns increased by 3%. In second and third place is the group of steering, chassis and brake units – 16.7%, and the TOP-3 is closed by the group of engine and exhaust system – 13.5%.
In the case of the first group, motorists most often had to stop on the way due to a battery malfunction. But in the second group, the frequent cause of breakdowns was defects in tires and wheel rims, as well as failure of the air suspension. The auto club emphasized that air suspensions with age hold air worse in the support elements, so when choosing a used car equipped with such a system, you need to be extremely careful – repairs can result in big money.

As for the third group, the researchers stated that the cause of engine breakdown is not so much in the weak reliability of the design, but in the lack of proper care for the car. In this regard, motorists are recommended to periodically check the engine oil level and not neglect the schedule of scheduled maintenance.
In addition, it is necessary to take into account the fact that frequent short trips harm the engine, and as for the exhaust, special attention should be paid to the particulate filter – if it does not reach the required temperature range, it becomes clogged and stops removing exhaust gases. The result – the engine suffocates from its own exhaust gases and soon begins to present unpleasant surprises to the owner.
However, there were also positive moments. Breakdown statistics for 2020 also showed that over the year the number of breakdowns of transmission reducers decreased – the share of this group decreased from 6.1 to 5.8%. However, it is assumed that this trend is associated not so much with more careful use of the clutch pedal, but with the expansion of the capabilities of automatic transmissions, which are becoming increasingly popular among motorists.
