Engineers are currently testing a plug-in hybrid version based on the upcoming generation of the Leon, whose debut is scheduled for 2012. At the same time, the Spanish manufacturer does not intend to expand its model range with new vehicle classes. The appearance of the new Leon largely echoes the features of the Seat IBE concept car shown in Geneva. That prototype was conceived as an electric vehicle, and its technical components are planned to be borrowed from the electric Volkswagen Golf, which is expected in 2013. The exact date for the arrival of the electric Leon has not yet been announced.

It is worth recalling that Seat's head, James Muir, previously stated that the only way to save the brand is to load the Spanish plant in Martorell to 90 percent of capacity, whereas currently the facility is only utilized at 60 percent. One option was to assemble the Audi Q3 there, but apparently, the Leon can also help in this matter.

Additionally, Seat and Skoda have previously confirmed their intention to produce their own compact city hatchbacks based on the Volkswagen up! concept, which should also bring additional benefits. At the moment, both companies are working on their designs.
