Gas prices are reaching 80 UAH per liter, so even a small reduction in fuel consumption becomes noticeable for a driver's budget. You can reduce consumption without additives or additional equipment by changing your driving style and monitoring your car's condition.
How to reduce fuel consumption without extra costs
According to Autoportal experts, fuel consumption is most affected by driving style, tire pressure, air conditioning use, excess weight, and the car's technical condition.
1. Drive more smoothly
Sharp accelerations and frequent braking can increase consumption by 15-30%. Drivers are advised to accelerate smoothly and react to the road situation in advance. Before a traffic light, instead of braking late, you can release the accelerator earlier and slow down with the engine.
2. Monitor tire pressure
A pressure drop of just 0.3 bar from the recommended level increases fuel consumption by about 2-3%. It is worth checking the readings at least once every two weeks and on cold tires.
3. Use the air conditioner correctly
The air conditioner can increase consumption by 5-15%, especially in the city. Up to 60 km/h, you can slightly open the windows. At speeds above 60-80 km/h, the air conditioner may be more rational, as open windows worsen aerodynamics.
An empty roof rack and bicycle mounts should also be removed when not needed.
4. Remove excess weight
Every additional 50 kg increases consumption by about 1-2%. Therefore, it is worth removing tools, canisters, and seasonal items from the trunk that are constantly carried without need.
5. Service the car in a timely manner
A dirty air filter, worn spark plugs, and incorrect wheel alignment angles can increase fuel consumption. It is also important to use engine oil of the viscosity recommended by the manufacturer.
“With gasoline at 80 UAH, even a few percent of excess consumption turns into noticeable additional costs. The easiest place to start is with driving style, tire pressure, and the car's technical condition,” notes author Oleksii Astapov.
