On the secondary market of Ukraine, for up to $10,000, compact vans and minivans can be an alternative to crossovers. They offer more usable space, wide possibilities for transforming the interior, and the absence of complex all-wheel drive can reduce maintenance costs.
Family cars up to $10,000: five practical models
The list includes five models priced from $5,500 to $10,000. They are characterized by passenger car platforms, economical engines, and spacious interiors.
1. Renault Scenic III / Grand Scenic (2009-2016)
Renault Scenic III and Renault Grand Scenic cost $6,500-$9,500. One of the options is the diesel 1.5 dCi with fuel consumption of just over 5 l/100 km. The model is built on the passenger car platform of the Renault Megane, which simplifies the search for suspension parts.
2. Volkswagen Touran (2003-2015)
Volkswagen Touran is priced at $6,500-$9,500. Among the available engines are the diesel 1.9 TDI and 2.0 TDI. Unlike all-wheel-drive crossovers, the Volkswagen Touran does not require maintenance of the 4×4 system coupling.
3. Opel Zafira B / Zafira Tourer (2005-2019)
Opel Zafira B and Opel Zafira Tourer can be found for $5,500-$9,000. The cars use components from the Opel Astra passenger car platform, and petrol engines allow the installation of LPG systems.
4. Ford C-Max / Grand C-Max (2010-2019)
Ford C-Max and Ford Grand C-Max cost $7,000-$10,000. The models are related to the Ford Focus, and the Ford Grand C-Max additionally offers sliding rear doors, which simplify passenger entry in tight parking spaces.
5. Citroen C4 Picasso (2006-2018)
Citroen C4 Picasso is offered for $6,000-$10,000. Among the available powertrains is the diesel 1.6 HDi. The model also stands out with a spacious interior and a comfortably tuned suspension.
Minivans are cheaper to maintain than crossovers
The savings are not only related to fuel consumption. The passenger car suspension design, smaller wheels, and the absence of all-wheel-drive components in many versions reduce the number of expensive parts in maintenance.
“For a family car, what matters is not the body height, but the amount of usable space and the real cost per kilometer,” notes author Oleksiy Astapov.
