In this article, we decided to summarize what 2013 turned out to be for the Ukrainian car market. It was, to put it mildly, not encouraging, and compared to the previous year, the volume of new passenger car sales decreased by a tenth.
In total, over the twelve months of the past year, 213,322 Ukrainians became owners of fresh cars, whereas a year earlier this figure was 237,602. Few could boast of sales growth — in fact, only about every fourth brand present on our market. As reported by the Ukrautoprom association, the most successful in this regard were BYD, which increased sales by 143.9%, Bohdan with a growth of 86.1%, and Mazda, which added 53.6%:

As for the opposite trend, it affected most automakers, not sparing domestic companies either. The largest drop was recorded for VAZ, which lost 53.5%, Chevrolet, which was down 53%, and Chery, which ended up in the red by 43%:

Below you can see the thirty most popular car brands in Ukraine, ranked by the results of new car sales in 2013:

If we turn to our new car sales rating, the most affluent buyers turned out to be residents of the capital. Quite a lot of people willing to purchase a fresh car were also found in Donetsk. The third spot in the list of the most active regions was taken by Dnipropetrovsk Oblast. According to the infographic data, the least interested in buying new cars (or simply lacking such an opportunity) are residents of Ternopil, Chernivtsi, and Volyn Oblasts.

From all that has been said, one can draw the only conclusion — the new car market in Ukraine is going through far from the best of times. One of the main reasons for weak demand, apparently, should be considered the reduced purchasing power of a significant part of the population. Moreover, almost all brands that managed to show positive dynamics achieved this through the sale of inexpensive models. Only a few brands stayed afloat thanks to buyers of middle income, if, of course, any still remain.

At the same time, in 2013 there was a noticeable improvement in the pace of sales among premium brands. However, this only once again confirms the well-known truth: wealthy people become even richer, and those who are poorer — even poorer...
