Usually, a hydrogen car implies a hybrid setup where hydrogen reacts chemically with oxygen, generating current that powers electric motors. In this case, however, we are talking about the most ordinary internal combustion engine, which was reconfigured to run on compressed hydrogen. For this, in the standard 1.6-liter engine, Toyota engineers equipped it with a new fuel supply and injection system. As a result, the output is a fully eco-friendly car - it produces no CO2 emissions, emits only water vapor (from the exhaust) and a negligible amount of carbon dioxide from burning engine oil.

The fuel is stored in a compressed state, under a pressure of 70 MPa. For this, the Corolla was equipped with a tank from the hydrogen Toyota Mirai.

By the way, a similar technology is used by the well-known in Ukraine Hyundai Sonata LPI and KIA K5 LPI. These cars are also equipped with conventional internal combustion engines, but they are tuned to run exclusively on gas.

In the near future, the hydrogen Corolla will undergo a good shakedown – it will take part in the 24-hour endurance race Super Taikyu Series 2021, which will be held from May 21-23 at the Fuji Speedway track.
