Such cars are capable of driving fully autonomously, but the driver can take control if necessary. The tests started in the German city of Hamburg on a limited 3-kilometer stretch.

The equipment of the self-driving cars includes 14 video cameras, 11 laser sensors, and seven additional radars. With the help of these devices, the artificial intelligence receives and processes up to five gigabytes of information. The total power of the system corresponds to the performance of approximately 15 modern laptops.
The autonomous Golfs monitor traffic neighbors and parked cars, as well as cyclists and pedestrians. The self-driving cars are capable of independently changing lanes in traffic, crossing intersections, and making complex decisions.
