The car covered almost the entire route without human involvement. Nevertheless, there was an operator in the cabin, ready to take the wheel at any moment — this is a necessary requirement for testing autopilots on public roads.
During the journey, the car reached speeds of up to 90 km/h. The company noted that the self-driving vehicle did not violate any of the speed limits set on this section.
“The goal of this test was to check the car's operation on a suburban highway in various road situations. Along the way, the condition of the road surface and the quality of markings changed. Weather conditions were also inconsistent: at times the sun was shining, but several times the car got caught in heavy rain. Part of the route was covered during the day, and part at dusk,” reported representatives of Yandex.
The next stage of testing Yandex's self-driving cars will take place on the territory of the special economic zone of Innopolis, located in Tatarstan. There, specialists plan to refine control algorithms for autonomous vehicles.
