The pilot complex is connected to a solar power plant operating at the university in Lappeenranta.
The project's goal is to clearly demonstrate how the entire chain of technological operations works and to obtain 200 liters of fuel and other hydrocarbons for research purposes. To date, this is the only demonstration facility of its kind where the entire process — from solar energy generation to hydrocarbon production — is concentrated in one place.
The demo plant is divided into four parts: solar panels, a system for capturing carbon dioxide and moisture from the air, an electrolysis unit for extracting hydrogen, and a synthesis unit that converts CO₂ and hydrogen into a crude oil substitute.
The pilot equipment is designed to produce small volumes of products. Production can be expanded by adding several more similar modules.
"By 2050, we will have to abandon burning fossil fuels, but humanity still cannot do without some hydrocarbons," noted Professor Jero Ahola of Lappeenranta University of Technology.
Tests of the Soletair demonstration complex will continue throughout the summer. Once the pilot phase is completed, in a few years the same synthesis units will begin to be used on an industrial scale within the European Union.
The data obtained during the project will help bring the technology to a commercial level and open new avenues for entrepreneurial activity.
