In an interview with The Wall Street Journal, Elon Musk said that Apple will begin mass production of its electric cars no later than 2020. The head of Tesla also admitted that Apple's car will become a direct competitor for his company.

“It's gratifying that [Apple] has taken on this matter, and I wish them success,” Musk noted. He added that there is room for many players in the electric car market.

Last fall, The Wall Street Journal wrote that Apple was working on its own electric car, with an estimated “start of deliveries” date of 2019. This may indicate that by that time the project could move into the engineering development phase.

At the same time, Apple itself has still not officially confirmed that it is working on an electric car at all.
