Hyundai IONIQ is the world's first car with three variants of electrified powertrains.
- hybrid engine
-plug-in hybrid powertrain
-electric motor
The new engine and electric motor in the IONIQ Hybrid deliver some of the best fuel consumption figures in its class.

Hyundai Motor, South Korea's largest automaker, has unveiled the IONIQ – a modern compact car that uses electricity as an energy source. The car can be equipped with an electric motor, a petrol-electric hybrid powertrain, or a plug-in petrol-electric engine.
“The launch of this model once again demonstrates our commitment to developing innovative products for the whole world. Hyundai Motor will make every effort to become one of the leading automakers in the global market for eco-friendly cars, and to this end, it will introduce more than 22 models in its eco-friendly vehicle lineup by 2020,” – Kwon Moon Shik, Vice President of Hyundai Motor's Research and Development Center.
The IONIQ Hybrid version will be the first to hit the market
The IONIQ Hybrid responds to the rapidly changing lifestyle of modern car owners, breaking established stereotypes about hybrids, as it not only offers best-in-class fuel consumption but also boasts a dynamic character and attractive design, which together form a unique combination not yet available in other hybrid cars.

The IONIQ Hybrid is equipped with a new four-cylinder Kappa 1.6 direct-injection engine and an electric motor producing 43.5 hp (32 kW), which runs on a lithium-polymer battery and allows the IONIQ Hybrid to drive in fully electric mode at speeds up to 120 km/h with maximum efficiency and minimal CO2 emissions.
The two powertrains have a combined peak output of 141 hp (103.6 kW) and torque of 265 Nm. A new six-speed dual-clutch automated transmission (6-DCT) provides instant response and smooth gear changes, offering exciting driving sensations and low fuel consumption. Fuel economy and driving dynamics can be further enhanced with ECO and SPORT modes.

In ECO mode, the automated transmission (6-DCT) shifts to higher gears earlier, achieving best-in-class fuel efficiency. In SPORT mode, lower gears are held longer, and engine thrust is combined with the electric motor to provide maximum powertrain response.
The smooth, elegant, and concise body lines harmoniously combine with the warmth of the IONIQ's interior, where efficient use of interior space is complemented by a logical and thoughtful approach to the placement of controls. The use of eco-friendly materials creates a simple and clear interior image, evoking a sense of space, sophistication, lightness, and purity.

The thoughtful layout allowed the IONIQ's hybrid components to be placed without compromising the space, flexibility, and practicality of the cabin.
Lithium-polymer battery
In the IONIQ Hybrid, Hyundai Motor engineers chose to use a lithium-polymer battery pack instead of traditional nickel-metal hydride ones. Thanks to the fact that lithium-polymer cells can take almost any shape, and thanks to the thoughtful layout, the battery pack was placed under the rear seats, resulting in the cabin and cargo area meeting the highest standard of comfort and functionality.

IONIQ Plug-in
The plug-in hybrid IONIQ Plug-in covers more than 50 km in electric-only mode thanks to a modern lithium-polymer battery with a capacity of 8.9 kWh. The electric motor producing 61 hp (45 kW), together with the four-cylinder Kappa 1.6 direct-injection engine, has CO2 emissions of just 32 g/km.
IONIQ Electric
The electric IONIQ Electric is equipped with a lithium-polymer battery with a capacity of 28 kWh, providing a range of more than 250 km. The always-available peak torque of 295 Nm is delivered by an electric motor with a maximum output of 120 hp (88 kW) paired with a single-speed reduction gear, which accelerates the car to 165 km/h.
The IONIQ meets the needs of people with different lifestyles and offers many modern components of comfort, safety, and communication capabilities, including a multimedia system with support for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto services, Tom Tom online services, and wireless smartphone charging.

The 7-inch LCD screen gives the driver's seat a high-tech look and displays readings from a range of digital sensors in high resolution, including specific readings for the hybrid or electric powertrain.

The name of the new car reflects some of the elements that formed the basis of its concept. ION is an “ion,” a charged particle. Including this word in the name reflects the key feature of the line of electrified powertrains for the car. The second part of the name is associated with the uniqueness (unique) of this model in the Hyundai lineup and demonstrates the brand's attention to the environment and readiness to offer maximum choice for its customers. Finally, the letter Q is part of the car's emblem and reflects the innovativeness of this modern model with low harmful emissions.
