Volvo Cars has announced the start of production of its flagship sedan S90 at the Geely (which owns Volvo) automobile plant in the Chinese city of Daqing.

According to the announced plan of Volvo Cars, the Chinese production site of Geely will become a global production and export hub through which cars of the Swedish brand will be distributed worldwide. In particular, the plant in Chengdu is planned to produce current and future models of the 60 series on the SPA modular platform, and the new automobile plant under construction in the Luqiao area (350 km from Shanghai) will start production of compact models of the 40 family on the CMA modular platform. The same plant will also produce platform-sharing cars of the new brand LYNK&CO, created by Geely, which owns Volvo.

"With these three plants and the assignment of one model line to each enterprise, Volvo is creating an efficient production structure that ensures a future prospect for growth," said Volvo President Håkan Samuelsson.

The Volvo S90 is built on the modular SPA (Scalable Platform Architecture) platform, used by both Volvo and Geely for developing large sedans and crossovers. The first Volvo model created under Geely's leadership on the SPA platform is the second-generation XC90, which has already become a sales leader in its class.

It is noteworthy that the same production facilities also produce the new Geely Emgrand 7FL, sales of which started in Ukraine in November 2016.
