By 2025, the German automaker intends to produce from two to three million cars with electric powertrains annually. This statement was made by the head of the concern, Matthias Müller, presenting the company's new development strategy called "Together — Strategy 2025".

To expand the range of electric vehicles, Volkswagen plans to build its own battery production plant, which in scale will be comparable to Tesla Motors' "Gigafactory". The construction of this enterprise will cost the concern 10 billion euros, and it will be located 50 kilometers from Volkswagen's main office in Wolfsburg.

Müller also noted that the new strategy involves reducing the number of model modifications (currently their number is about 340) and reducing the number of modular platforms from 12 to four. They will be replaced by four types of platforms designed for small cars, medium-sized cars, premium models, and sports cars.
