The reason for this measure was notifications from Takata and the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. They pointed to a defect in the front passenger airbag inflators, which could cause the airbag to burst at the moment of deployment.
Certain models of Toyota, Lexus and Scion are subject to the recall. For owners, such repairs will be free of charge. As Reuters reports, problems with Takata inflators have already led to 13 deaths and more than 100 injuries worldwide.
Last week, the manufacturer announced 14 million defective airbags it had produced. Under pressure from US regulators, the company agreed to recall 40 million inflators by 2019. The process will be divided into several stages. At the same time, about 29 million such devices were recalled before May 4. According to the agency, Takata is conducting the largest recall in the history of automobile safety in the US.
