The Japanese government announced such plans for the period when the Olympic and Paralympic Games will be held in the country.

The company that will implement the driverless taxi must meet a number of requirements. In particular, it must take full responsibility in the event of an accident. In addition, the operator will need to create a security system that allows remote monitoring of the operation of driverless cars and can forcibly stop them if malfunctions occur.

Robot Taxi Inc, as well as Uber and the American service Lyft, are being considered as possible operators of such a service.

At the same time, the Japanese authorities do not intend to forcibly introduce driverless taxis. Customers will be left with the opportunity to choose independently when ordering: whether a car with a driver or without one will arrive.
