This statistic was published not by domestic car flippers, but by the authoritative German automobile club ADAC together with the University of Magdeburg. ADAC specialists found that the odometers of most cars allow you to easily set the desired value in a few minutes, and some "specialists" manage this operation in just half a minute.
Expectations associated with the advent of electronic odometers were not justified. The readings of such devices can also be easily reprogrammed, though this requires additional equipment. In Germany, devices for reducing mileage are sold completely legally, and their cost reaches 7 thousand euros.
At the same time, the Germans themselves do not seek to risk their reputation and adjust the mileage on their own — often they simply do not know how to do it. But many firms founded by recent immigrants have appeared that offer this service for a quite modest fee. And this despite the fact that such an act is considered a criminal offense! For such manipulations, you can easily get a year in prison.
According to ADAC estimates, the annual damage from this type of fraud reaches about 6 billion euros.
